Hwy 108 - Sonora Pass

California Highway 108 goes from Modesto through Oakdale and Sonora, and over Sonora Pass before ending at US Highway 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada near Bridgeport.

Here, I have selected the 78 km long section through the Sierra Nevada, from Strawberry in the West over Sonora Pass to Sonora Junction on the Eastern side.

The 40 km East of Strawberry and the 8 km West of Sonora Junction are rolling. The climb fom the Western side is the harder one of the two: it gains about 1200 m over 15 km and it features some 20+ % sections. The climb from the East has an average grade of moderate 6.5% (900 m over 14 km).

On the Eastern side you can take Hwy 395 for a few miles for connecting sections. In the South there are the roads to Twin Lakes and Virginia Lakes, and Hwy 120 into Yosemite Park over Tioga Pass and into the desert and Hwy 182 into Nevada.

In the North, Hwy 89 and Monitor Pass is your gateway to the Tahoe area and additional Sierra crossings.
